Mass media plays a vital role in our society, it is all around us from the tv shows, radio music, movies to magazines and all the advertising one sees on tv, newspaper, hoardings, sms on mobile phones ie. All the information is mass communication. Without these we will feel totally disconnected, our life style will be very dull without entertainment.
Attraction of Media
Mass Communication encompasses every frontier of knowledge field - with the aim of reaching and influencing the targeted audience. Mass Communication is all about packaging and delivering the message in a manner to create an interest and arouse desire to act in a desired manner. Hence the content has to be very clear and consideration is to be given to the tone and style. One has to be very audience- interest- centric in an era of cross media competition.
Journalists provide the six basic areas of information; WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHY, WHEN, & HOW, IN A VERY INTERESTING MANNER. They are like surveillance satellite which keeps watch over all the events happening around the world. Mass communication takes up different roles while representing different media but in the emerging global trend of convergence of all the media due to joint ownership of Newspaper, FM Radio, TV Production and TV News Broadcasting and internet news, add to it mobile, SMS News ticker services, the language and the style of presentation is merging at a fast pace.
Scope & teaching methods
Communication itself requires great skill which requires sustained practice in all the fields, the knowledge for content development, good command over wording and grammar, polished presentation ability, seeing the context in totality, an overall confidence in executing the performance in front of audience and camera. All these requires focused approach, we use a wide range of coaching methods reflecting not only the syllabus but also a range of varied topics covering politics, sociology, psychology, marketing, advertising, everything covered by the media is taken as case study. Students are encouraged to produce, direct, write skits, comical or educational dramatization of social issues, using video-camera, making use of music & sound system, practical approach is emphasized for every area of subject, surveys, interviews, group discussions, seminar by the experts, mock up studio settings, role enacting and mimic acting, using computer graphics, drawings etc, gives them first hand experience, of the actual working environment.
Job Prospects and Career Options
They can find employment with advertising agencies, media management groups, event management, video and movie production houses, newspapers, periodicals and magazines, central information service, press information bureau, websites, RJ and VJ on radio channels and TV, presenters with various channels like Doordarshan, ZEE TV, Star TV etc. At the same time they can do freelancing. One can also take up this career as a part time employment along with any other field of work. Journalists can work as editors, reporters, columnists, correspondents, staff or freelance writer, photojournalists, proofreaders, news analysts etc. in print (newspapers and magazines) and electronic (Radio, Television and Web) media.
